Bio

I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1992. When I was four years old, I moved to Portland, Oregon. I first began studying music when I was five by taking piano lessons with Robyn Pfeifer at Piano Werks Studio. Two years later, I began studying violin and guitar. In sixth grade, I began studying the trumpet. During middle school, my trumpet playing allowed me to become first trumpet in our jazz band. We participated in a lot of competitions and finished first in many of them. During the year I was in the jazz band, I began composing. I had been composing ever since I began studying music, but I have never taken it seriously before. When I entered high school, I decided to begin studying composition with Mary Wright. Mary holds degrees in composition from Princeton University (M.F.A., Ph.D.), the California Institute of the Arts (M.F.A.), and in music theory from the Cleveland Institute of Music (B.M). Mary currently teaches at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She has helped me a great deal with music theory, orchestration, widening my musical spectrum, and composition. Upon entering high school, I also began to notice the music in film a lot more than I had before. I had always noticed and liked the music in film, but now I began to love it. The more I listened to the music in the movies, the more I wanted to try writing music for film. I wanted to contribute to the emotion that a film gave an audience. I wanted to create magical and unforgettable melodies that would be remembered forever. So I began to practice by scoring short clips of independent films that either directors sent me, or I came across on the internet. Although I never actually “scored” the film, I was still able to practice using my music to convey different emotions for the same clip. In 2008, I won an international film scoring competition at The Indie Gathering. There were over 200 submissions from all over, and mine was selected as a winner. Currently, I am a junior at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon.
